Forced Reset Triggers (FRTs): What You Need to Know Before Hitting the Range

At Fletcher Arms, safety and responsibility always come first. As new firearm technologies emerge, we stay ahead by educating our members and creating policies that keep everyone safe while still allowing you to explore the latest gear. One topic that has come up more frequently in recent years is the use of Forced Reset Triggers (FRTs).

In this post, we’ll break down what FRTs are, why they raise safety concerns, what our official policy is, and how you can become FRT-qualified at Fletcher Arms.

What is a Forced Reset Trigger (FRT)?

A Forced Reset Trigger (FRT) is a type of semi-automatic trigger that rapidly resets after each shot, “forcing” the trigger back into a forward position. This design allows the shooter to fire more quickly than with a traditional semi-auto trigger, while still technically requiring a trigger pull for each round fired.

To the untrained eye, an FRT may seem similar to a fully automatic system—but it is not the same thing. The firearm still requires a trigger press for each shot. However, the faster cycle of reset means the rate of fire can be significantly higher than most shooters are accustomed to controlling.

Why FRTs Can Be Dangerous

Like any piece of equipment, an FRT is not inherently unsafe—but it does demand a higher level of skill and discipline. Some of the risks include:

  • Loss of control: The increased rate of fire can overwhelm inexperienced shooters, making it harder to keep all rounds on target.

  • Muzzle discipline challenges: Faster shooting means less margin for error if the shooter does not maintain proper control of the firearm’s direction.

  • Range hazards: Shooting ceilings, walls, or floors becomes a much greater risk with rapid fire if fundamentals break down.

  • Legal and compliance concerns: The ATF’s stance on FRTs has shifted over time, and while Fletcher Arms allows them under specific conditions, owners should always remain aware of evolving laws.

For these reasons, we require a qualification process before anyone uses an FRT-equipped firearm at our ranges.

Fletcher Arms’ FRT Policy

We’re proud to be a range that balances safety, innovation, and fun. That’s why we’ve developed a clear Policy for Use of Forced Reset Triggers:

  1. Qualification Required: All shooters must pass the Fletcher Arms FRT Qualification Course before using an FRT on our range.

  2. Safety Rules Apply: Your firearm must be in safe working order, and you must maintain trigger discipline, muzzle control, and ensure all rounds impact your target.

  3. Inspections: RSOs may inspect any FRT-equipped firearm before use.

  4. Ammunition Restrictions: Only standard, commercially available ammo is permitted unless pre-approved.

  5. Rate of Fire Control: Shooters must demonstrate the ability to safely control their rate of fire.

  6. RSO Supervision: An RSO may require direct oversight if safety concerns arise.

  7. Zero Tolerance: Shooting walls, ceilings, floors, or anything other than your target will not be tolerated.

  8. Revocation of Privileges: Unsafe handling = immediate suspension of FRT privileges, and possibly removal from the range.

📌 Important Note: Passing the qualification only applies to the individual shooter—it does not extend to guests.

How to Get FRT Certified at Fletcher Arms

Getting certified is simple and affordable:

  • Cost: $20 per shooter

  • Where: Fletcher Arms (Waukesha & Lake Country locations)

  • How: Sign up at the counter or call ahead to schedule your FRT qualification.

Final Thoughts

At Fletcher Arms, we’re committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all shooters. FRTs are an exciting piece of firearm technology, but they demand responsibility and control.
